A Rich History

The Breakers was first opened as the Palm Beach Inn in 1896 by Henry Flagler, a noted businessman and railroad developer. Throughout its history the hotel underwent several major changes following a massive expansion and three fires, one of which destroyed the all-wood main building. The reconstruction modeled the resort after Rome’s Villa Medici, even importing Italian artisans to complete the renowned painted ceilings in the lobby and first-floor common areas. Today The Breakers is a richly historic masterpiece, and a resort destination to remember.
